Going Away

Hey, we need your help! We would like to plan a local trip (within 4 hrs +/- 1 hr drive of Waukegan) to someplace nice and relaxing for the week of xmas. Bed & Breakfasts are very welcome and pampering is a suggestion. Interesting things to do are also nice.

Our second trip will be a bit more dramatic. We're looking to really go away around late February. Similar needs as above with perhaps a bit more activity would be great.

Thanks in advance! We hope all our U.S. friends had a relaxing Thanksgiving.

We have a little book called "Select Registry: Distinguished Inns of North America" that is divided up by state. We've had luck with it in New England, and you're welcome to borrow it. We'll hand it over on Wednesday.

A couple of things spring to mind. All are in Wisconsin, my old stomping grounds. First, there is the classic trip to Lake Geneva. Pretty, relaxing, lots of nice accomodations. I have never slept there myself because I lived so close, but I know it is a beloved destination. A second, slightly further north, suggestion is right by our wedding. the countryside is beautiful and relaxing, and if you are looking for luxury try Kohler in Sheboygan Falls, just 15 minutes away from our wedding site. Kohler is the epitome of luxury, 5 stars, with spa and whatnot. very pricey but luxury to the max. Also up in Sheboygan/Plymouth area is the Osthoff resort in Elkhart Lake. A beautiful old hotel structure recently renovated. Mostly suites. Lots of fireplaces and big windows overlooking Lake Elkhart. Lots of really top notch dining within walking distance. Many of our fancy guests at the wedding stayed here. It is a beautiful place and I hope to do a getaway there some day. More reasonable prices than the 5 star Kohler. But you could still do spa time at Kohler if you wanted.

But if you want my personal vote for the holidays: Door County. Before I left for ghana terry took me to the Chanticleer Inn. It is a gorgeous converted farmhouse. It is run by a darling gay couple who do the place up beautifully for the holidays. There are grazing sheep outside. Every night you get fresh baked cookies and milk and every morning you get a breakfast basket with incredible muffins and juice. The surrounding area has beautiful scenery and some nice restaurants. Well worth the trip. one of my favorite memories.

If you go up to Lake Geneva, I am good friends with a lovely couple who live up there (actually, on an alfalfa farm within driving distance of the lake) who are fabulous and would show you around. In the westerly direction, Galena is surprisingly nice, and I hear the spas are good there, too.

Sorry, I'm "anonymous". That is, I'm not, really. I was just that way for a second. I'm better now...

I agree with Erin, Door County is beautiful. James and I did a trip up to Egg Harbor and it was really pretty. Stayed at a charming bed and breakfast right by the lake.

I would also recommend Turkey Run Inn in Indiana. They have wonderful walking trails, and charming covered brigdes along the trails. The drive down there is beautiful if you avoid the highways. Check these sites out.

In February if you want to travel further and you want to go warm, there's Sedona. It's beautiful country for sightseeing and more activities like hiking. And if you are not going to fly, there's Amtrak. If you are flying, there's always Hawaii.
